2:09 am - $3 Tree

Inspired by St. John Cathedral NY's Christmas tree, I made origami cranes for ornaments.
It cost $3 plus tax for the tree, gold wrapping paper, and 1 silver string.
I used aluminum foil for the tree skirt.

The LED string light has been around for a while (I got it from Target for about $8).

2:10 pm - new and question

hey i'm new and i'm asking for some help!

i want to display my pictures on my big, blank wall without picture frames, but any tape i've used to stick them directly on the wall fails miserably. My desired result is sort of collage-esque and large. Any suggestions on how i can get them on the wall (without thumbtacks- i don't want holes in the pictures!) or what to mount them on?

thanks a lot!

stick_shifting Hey all I am just letting you know that I put a crazy 'lightning lamp' on sale on ebay. If you guys are interested here is the link:

And yes, those are the lamps that everyone had back in like the 70s or whatever... Here is a picture for you to seeeeee:
And yes, I also realize it is kinda in an odd shape, but I swear it is just a lamp.

10:53 pm - My dremel tool is my best friend.

I love making stuff with old and found stuff, thought i'd share some with you. Behind the cut is very image heavy.

much imagesCollapse )

I hope some of this inspires you to look at trash a different way. Oh, and the black velvet backdrop is the skirt of the ugliest black dress in North America someone gave me, so it cost nothing, and looks impressive, no? =}

(Also a great way to make money come flea market season!)

Being a starving artist..i buy all my frames at thrift stores. sometimes the frame comes with  (in my opinion) an ugly painting. so..what do you do with the painting on canvas if you are someone like myself who doesnt like to waste anything and takes pride in "recycling"? you take your exacto knife, cut the canvas off  the stretcher bars and turn that ugly $1 painting into an interesting artistic floor mat! they are perfect in the kitchen in front of the sink... they can be wiped clean with water and last quit awhile!

7:50 am - EASY PROJECT

tiki cat candle (image/art is (C) Joanna Nelson. this project is for personal use ONLY, and NEVER resale with out my permission/contract. thank you)

yes, YOU can make one too!

1. simply look through my journal for the kitty you like.

2. print it out to the size you need.

3. cut it out to fit a glass candle holder (which everyone usually has handy somewhere in the house hehe)

4. add double stick tape to back of the picture

5. carefully apply picture to the outside of the candle holder

and WHALLLLLA, there you go! instant whimsy! ;)

***please do not leave burning unattended!***

4:47 pm - DIY Cartoon Wall Mural

I hate white walls.
I mean really hate them.

So I made a wall art installation at my old apartment of the Trix Rabbit using nothing but tape, construction paper and wrapping paper, I figured lots of other crafty kids might want to know how to do it.

I pitched the DIY article to the magazines BUST, ReadyMade and Budget Living, but no one seemed to care enough to publish my DIY article on it, so then documented how to do it on Grrl.com:
DIY Cartoon Mural

I hope you try making your own mural... it's cheap and fun and can come down easily when you get bored.

current mood: artistic

1:48 pm - cutting boards

there is a push recently to buy pricey cutting boards of different colors. in industrial kitchens, they are golden and used constantly, but at home, a bit too much for something you won't use every day.

what i've done is found cutting boards i like, that are reasonably priced (find a plastic board, so you can bleach it clean once a month, and softer plastic is better and easier on your knives than hard plastic or glass boards), and then mark them on the back for meat, veggies, poultry. and i color code the sides of the board with permanent marker so i can pull the right one out.

I trashpicked a couch that matches my living room perfectly (purple and orange, you don't like it? i don't care!). Problem, it got a little rained on. I am positive it can be saved, it's just a little damp and not at all stinky. Any advice? Steam cleaning? What? Thanks

10:33 pm - DIY Headboard

Well, I finally can read in my bed now.

Check out my DIY headboard - it took me about 20 mins to finish.
It's not much to look at, and I wished I add some foam to make it thicker and more boxy.
But being the cheapskate I am, I thought I was saving $3.49 on the foam. Oh well, it still looks decent as long as I don't see it from sideways.

another view

Total cost: about $30 + tax for MDF, batting, and fabric.
The most expensive item is the fabric, but it is made from this really nice soft velour materials.

Now I found a website selling upholstery button (you just put a piece of fabric and snap the button case) for about $3 for a dozen plus shipping.
Should I add the upholstery buttons? That's an extra cost, but it does look a bit blah right now.
Yay or Nay?

4:52 pm - Aluminum wall

I don't know if you consider this super cheap, but I think it's a very nifty idea and definitely affordable:

You can also alternate with cheaper cardboard or wrapping paper, or even some remnant carpet to make black and white checker pattern would be really cool.
I think I saw something similar in one of Trading Spaces episodes.
